KATE DUESTERBERG

For the past 15 years, Kate and her husband Will Allen have managed Cedar Circle Farm in East Thetford, VT. After transitioning the farm to an organic operation, they started an Agriculture Education Center. There is a farmstand and commercial kitchen on site, a CSA with almost 200 members, and they sell to 4 area farmers markets. Cedar Circle Farm is an organic farm with a social mission. They engage the community to develop and share practices that promote regenerative agriculture, good health, and a resource-rich environment.

Kate has worked all of her adult life to promote local, organic farming – from the perspective of policy advocate, community organizer, institutional change advocate, and farm manager. Prior to coming to the Upper Valley, Kate at UVM, where she helped establish the UVM Center for Sustainable Agriculture. A big part of the focus was to organize programs to help farmers and agricultural professionals (Extension, NRCS, Department of Agriculture) learn about sustainable and organic farming techniques, calling upon experienced farmers as teachers. Kate also worked with the Women’s Agricultural Network at UVM and the Sustainable Cotton Project, as managing director, in California. She worked as Sustainable Agriculture program coordinator at Rural Vermont, and before that, at Illinois Stewardship Alliance. Kate received a Masters Degree from Southern Illinois University in Community Development & Ag Economics. Her thesis focus was to examine the potential affects of GMO crops on the structure of agriculture in Illinois.
